Garcin Syndrome in a Case of Cancer of Base of Skull

Abstract
A case of malignancy of the base of the skull accompanied by generalized disturbances of the cranial nerve (Garcin Syndrome) in a male patient, aged 60, is reported. At the time of first visit (Dec. 15, 1969), the patient complained of progressive severe unilateral headache and hearing impairment, and diplopia.
Examinations revealed that serous otorrhea from the left ear, obstruction of the auditory tube, and impaired movement of the left eye ball. Under suspicious of petrositis a mastoidectomy. for purpose of exploration and treatment, was performed on Jan. 19, 1970.
Post-operatively, some improvement of the above mentioned symptoms could be observed for a short while. But about 15 days later, the patient started to complain additional symptoms such as misswallowing, hoarseness and disturbance of speech, etc. Re-examination of the nasopharynx on Feb. 13, 1970, disclosed a small ulcerated tumor at the region of the torus tubalis on the same side, biopsy of which revealed it to be a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.
After then, the patient was treated with irradiation of Co60, which brougt great improvement, however it could not irradicate the tumor. Abouttwo months after the irradiation treatment, all symptoms recurred and facial paralysis appeared too. The patient at present is in terminal stage.
